Getting to Trinidad

Flights from the UK, Piarco Airport, taxis, maxi taxis and car hire — everything you need to plan your journey

Getting to Trinidad from the UK is easier than you might think. Direct flights from London Gatwick to Piarco International Airport take approximately 9.5 hours, and several airlines serve the route. Once you arrive, getting around the island is straightforward with a mix of taxis, maxi taxis (minibuses), and car hire. Here's everything you need to know about planning your journey.

Flights from the UK

✈️ British Airways (Direct)

The most popular option from the UK. BA operates direct flights from London Gatwick (LGW) to Piarco International Airport (POS). Flight time is approximately 9.5 hours outbound and 8.5 hours return. Flights operate several times per week, with daily service during peak season. Return fares typically range from £500-£900 depending on season and how far in advance you book.

✈️ Virgin Atlantic (Seasonal)

Virgin Atlantic operates seasonal service to Trinidad, typically during the winter season and Carnival period. Check their schedule as it varies year to year. When available, Virgin offers competitive fares and their Upper Class cabin is a great way to arrive in style.

✈️ Caribbean Airlines

Trinidad's national carrier offers connections from London Gatwick via Barbados. The routing adds a stop but can sometimes offer lower fares. Caribbean Airlines also provides the inter-island connection between Trinidad and Tobago (a quick 20-minute flight) and serves destinations across the Caribbean.

Flight to Trinidad

Piarco International Airport

Piarco International Airport (POS) is located approximately 30km east of Port of Spain, roughly a 30-45 minute drive depending on traffic. The airport has been modernised in recent years and has a good range of facilities including ATMs, currency exchange, duty-free shops, restaurants, and car hire desks.

On arrival, you'll pass through immigration (have your return ticket and accommodation details ready), collect your luggage, and clear customs. The airport is well-organised and the process is usually straightforward. UK citizens receive a 90-day visa-free stamp on arrival.

💡 Airport Tip

Pre-book your airport transfer or car hire before you arrive. The taxi rank outside arrivals has set rates to various destinations (posted on boards), but it's worth agreeing the fare before you get in. The set rate to Port of Spain is approximately TT$250-350 (around £25-35).

Getting Around Trinidad

🚕

Taxis

Private taxis are the most convenient way to get around but also the most expensive. They are not metered — always agree the fare before starting your journey. A trip across Port of Spain costs TT$50-100. To Maracas Beach, around TT$250-350.

🚐

Maxi Taxis

Colour-coded minibuses that run fixed routes across the island. By far the cheapest way to travel. Red band = POS and east, green band = south, black band = Princes Town area. Fares are typically TT$4-12 depending on distance. An authentic local experience.

🚗

Car Hire

The best option for exploring beyond Port of Spain. Rental agencies operate from the airport and city. Prices from TT$250-500/day (£25-50). Remember: Trinidad drives on the LEFT. Driving in POS can be chaotic — outside the city, roads are much calmer.

⛴️

Inter-Island Ferry

The TT Express fast ferry connects Trinidad (Port of Spain) to Tobago (Scarborough) in approximately 2.5 hours. Alternatively, Caribbean Airlines flies the route in 20 minutes. Book ferry tickets in advance, especially for holidays and weekends.
